BARBARA WEIR

Barbara Weir is a celebrated artist and politician, she had been campaigning for the local land rights movement since 1970s. In 1985 she was elected as the first female president of the Indigenous Urapunta Council.

Barbara was one of the Stolen Generation, where Aboriginal children were forcibly removed from their families and placed into foster care. She was reunited with her mother in the 1960s. She took up painting in 1985, her work includes representations of plants and dreaming stories and is much sought after. Her mother, Minnie Pwerle, is widely regarded as one of Australia's most significant contemporary female artists along with her Aunty the renowned Emily Kame Kngwarreye.
