JASMINE COE Mother Sun
Wiradjuri–British | Bristol, United Kingdom
Mother Sun explores ideas of parenthood, belonging and our relationship with Country. Raised by her mother, Jasmine draws a parallel between the life-giving presence of the sun and the constant influence of maternal love throughout childhood.
Together with Father Moon, these works explore Jasmine's personal reflections on parenthood, family and our relationship with Country. While Father Moon is currently being exhibited in Sydney, Mother Sun remains in the United Kingdom, with the two works residing on opposite sides of the world. Like the sun and moon, they remain connected within the same story despite the distance between them. This echoes Jasmine's own upbringing between Britain and Australia, where identity and belonging were shaped across two worlds.
The relationship between the Sun, Moon and Earth becomes a reflection of mother, father and child. By placing the sun in the role of mother, the work invites us to see ourselves as Earth itself - Country.
In 2026, Mother Sun was selected as the featured artwork for the launch of the Australia House Creatives event, celebrating emerging Australian creative talent in the United Kingdom. To mark the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week, the painting was also featured on the cover of the Daisy Green Collection monthly magazine, accompanied by an interview with Jasmine exploring Coe Gallery's journey and the role of Aboriginal art in fostering cross-cultural understanding.
