ARTWORK DETAILS:
In My Country, Kudditji Kngwarreye captures the spirit and memory of his ancestral homelands at Alhalkere in Utopia, north-east of Alice Springs. As a senior Anmatyerre lawman and custodian of the Emu Dreaming, Kudditji translates deep cultural knowledge into radiant fields of colour that evoke the shifting light, heat, and ceremony of his Country.
The younger brother of acclaimed artist Emily Kam Kngwarray, Kudditji shared her instinctive approach to painting and deep connection to Country. Rather than depicting specific symbols or topographies, his paintings convey the essence of place, the lived experience, stories, and Law that bind people to land. Through his instinctive layering of paint, Kudditji communicates the spiritual and emotional presence of Country, bridging ancestral tradition and contemporary expression.
