Returning to Country: 40 Years since the Uluṟu–Kata Tjuṯa Handback

Coe Gallery joined Aṉangu Traditional Owners at Australia House, London, on Thursday 16 October to mark 40 years since the Uluṟu–Kata Tjuṯa Handback. In the presence of King Charles III and hosted by the Australian High Commission, the commemoration honoured the 26 October 1985 return of title to Aṉangu - an enduring milestone in Aboriginal land rights. The Ceremony included the Land Rights song in language and an Inma (traditional dance), creating a powerful atmosphere of respect and continuity. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the anniversary as “a milestone in Aboriginal land rights in Australia,” while Board Chair Tapaya Edwards reflected on the ongoing work to care for Country and keep Tjukurpa strong for future generations. We were honoured to reconnect with Aunty Alison Milyika Carroll and to reflect on our own family’s memories of attending the 1985 Handback. With deep respect, we congratulate Aṉangu on this historic anniversary.
