JASMINE COE Galing (Water)

Galing, meaning water in Wiradjuri, celebrates freshwater Country and the enduring relationship between water, land, family and cultural memory. Wiradjuri Country is often described as the ‘land of the three rivers’, with waterways forming an essential part of the landscape and of the lives, histories and connections held within it.

Jasmine’s family and heritage are deeply connected to the Kalare (Lachlan River), creating a personal point of connection within the work. The painting draws upon traditional Wiradjuri linear expression, using repeated lines and rhythm to evoke the movement and flow of water across Country. Through this visual language, water becomes a place through which memory, identity and belonging are carried across generations.

Through Galing, Jasmine reflects on water as a life-giving and sustaining presence. The work honours freshwater Country as something living and continuous, shaped by relationships between people, place and ancestry and recognises the importance of carrying these connections forward through culture, memory and care.
